One of the more ambitious titles released in recent years, the relatively small Russian studio, Battlestate Games, hit the nail on the proverbial head with Escape from Tarkov.

Officially described as a “tactical first person shooter”, Escape from Tarkov plays more like an MMO with survival shooter elements, as well as PVPVE, which means that you’ll either encounter AI-controlled enemies and other humans alike in the game, both of which are out to kill you.

Featuring one of the steepest learning curves in recent releases, Escape from Tarkov offers a more challenging type of gameplay that sets it apart from the other more user-friendly shooters with looting and survival elements available today.

Unfortunately, despite its growing appeal, especially among fans of hardcoremilitary shooters, the innate difficulty of Escapefrom Tarkov can make even its most avidplayers want to take a break and try something else.

If that’s the case for you, then don’t worry, because we’ve got you covered.

Below, we’ve listed down 10 games that share many if not all of the elements that make Escape from Tarkov so enjoyable to play.

1. Insurgency Sandstorm

Thefollow-up to Insurgency, the moderately successful team-based tactical first-person shooter,Insurgency Sandstorm takesthe best things about its prequel and brings everything up a notch. This includes, among others, an increased focus on immersive andrealistic modern combat, featuring authentic weaponry and vehiclesused in an actual warfare.

Whatsets Insurgency Sandstorm apartfrom other more realistic shooters is its emphasis on team play andcoordination.

InInsurgency Sandstorm, playerswho tend to wander off on their own tend to not live well. Smartpositioning and map awareness are key to victories, perhaps even moreso than good aiming reflexes.

If you’re looking for the same challenging gameplay found Escape from Tarkov but in a more team-based setting, Insurgency Sandstorm is perfect for you.

2. Rising Storm 2: Vietnam

Similar to Insurgency Sandstorm and Escape from Tarkov, in Rising Storm 2: Vietnam, it shouldn’t take longer than 2-3 bullets to take other players down or go down.

Like Insurgency Sandstorm, Rising Storm 2: Vietnam doesn’t have that same PVPVE element. This means that, although the 64-player multiplayer matches that can take place across as many as 20 maps is nice, there’s significantly less priority on looting as there is on killing other players.

Not to mention, Rising Storm 2: Vietnam puts heavy emphasis on realism and teamwork.

That’s both a good thing and a bad thing.

If you prefer your shooters like a realistic military simulation where precise coordination between squad member is necessary, Rising Storm 2: Vietnam might just be for you. But, if you prefer something more fluid and just as challenging, where you still have the option to have fun while playing as a lone wolf as you do in Escape from Tarkov, then you’re better off scrolling down further on our list.

3. Hired Ops

Hired Ops was created by a subsidiary company of Battlestate Games, which explains why both Hired Ops and Escape from Tarkov share a lot of the same assets, including the graphics, voice lines, gameplay, as well as in-game universe.

Whatsets Hired Ops apartfrom Escape from Tarkov isthat both games focus on different things.

Forstarters, Escape from Tarkov focuseson being a hardcore, military-grade FPS with survival and lootingmechanics, where players can play either as themselves alone or withothers, or as one of the randomly-generated AI, and are the maindrivers of the economy. On the other hand, HiredOps is still very much tacticalshooter. But, in Hired Ops, yougo into raids as a mercenary while trying to complete a contract. There’s still loot. Lots of it actually. You’re also trying tosurvive. However, the way that the economy works is less like that ofan MMO, unlike in Escape from Tarkov.

Hired Ops has also been described as the more “casual” game between the two.

Plus, Hired Ops is free-to-play, making it an excellent alternative for players who are interested in trying Escape from Tarkov for the first time but aren’t so sure about taking the plunge and buying the game just yet.

4. World War 3

Whatif instead of writing an alternative history, an FPS title insteadfocused on giving us a glimpse on what war would look like if it wasfought with modern military technology?

Well, say hello to World War 3.

A re-imagining of a possible third World War in the form of a video game, World War 3 lets players join in on a large-scale, realistic combat simulation featuring everything that you’d expect you’d find in an actual battlefield today, including but not limited to drones, modern vehicles, and weapons, all of which are fought in real life locations such as Berlin, Moscow, and Warsaw.

For times when Escape from Tarkov just feels too punishingly difficult but you still want to enjoy the same realistic military simulation feel of the game, World War 3 is an excellent alternative.

5. S.T.A.L.K.E.R Series

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R franchise, which stands for Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers, Explorers and Robbers, currently spans three games, with a fourth in S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 rumored to release in 2021.

Easilyone of the oldest games on our list, what S.T.A.L.K.E.Rlacks in modern conveniences andniceties, it makes up for in an incredibly intense atmosphere and aunique setting.

Notto mention, you could argue that S.T.A.L.K.E.Ris essentially a single-player versionof Escape from Tarkov. There’sthe weapon customization, frustrating difficulty, more realisticresponsive shooting, and an emphasis in knowing how to move aroundthe maps properly to make good use of whatever little ammunition andlife you have.

Perhapsthe biggest difference between any one of the S.T.A.L.K.E.Rgames and Escapefrom Tarkov is that the former are onlysingle-player games and the enemies are AI-controlled horrificcreatures.

With three titles to play, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games should keep you on your toes as you take a break from Escape from Tarkov.

6. DayZ

What would happen if Escape from Tarkov had zombies? Well, DayZ offers a pretty close approximation.

One of the grand daddies of the survival shooter genre, DayZ has come a long way since its early days. The zombies are much harder to kill these days and the game has gone on to become a respectable standalone game with smoother gameplay as opposed to being a glorified, bug-filled mod for ARMA 2.

Also, similar to Escape from Tarkov, it’s every man for himself in DayZ.

Both games share the same satisfaction of jumping on an entire squad and enjoying the spoils, as well as frustration when you lose it all. However, what sets DayZ apart is that, despite its lack of an in-game economy, it’s arguably more difficult because of the many different things that can punish you, including the weather, your hunger, thirst, as well as an entire server who could possibly turn on you should you decide to kill other players indiscriminately, or you know, just because you’re the new guy in town.

7. Hunt: Showdown

Asif zombies weren’t scary enough.

Hunt: Showdown takes creatures, who are clearly inspired by the designs and machinations of horror fiction writer, H.P. Lovecraft, and layers it with patented Crytek visuals to make a punishing game filled with horrific creatures even more nightmarish.

It also doesn’t help that in Hunt: Showdown, death is permanent, and your gear is always at risk. Sure, you can always bring a friend or an unlikely ally in a stranger with you, but you’re still just as prone to dying to some type of ghost or ghoul lurking about as you are to the other hunters prowling and looking for their next target like you are.

https://exlapho.hatenablog.com/entry/2020/10/18/163111. A high-risk, high-reward kind of game, Hunt: Showdown is definitely not for the faint of heart.

8. SCUM

A game with arguably the same approach to the survival shooter genre as Escape from Tarkov, you could consider both of these games as different sides of the same coin.

On one hand, you’ve got Escape from Tarkov, which focuses on realism, including a player-driven in-game economy, and encourages PVP interactions more than PVE. On the other hand, SCUM rewards survival and progression by giving players so many options and things to do, from places to explore, things to craft, and a decent PvE mechanic that allows you to focus on just surviving and less about trying to become the last man standing.

If your goal is to role play as much as to survive, SCUM might just be the game for you.

9. Fallout Series

The Fallout games, especially the more recent titles, won’t be mistaken as unforgiving nor difficult. Even when cranked up to its highest difficulty settings, the average player won’t have problems clearing through any of the games unless they deliberately make things hard for themselves.

Even then though, Fallout is a nice break away from Escape from Tarkov’s soviet setting. Not to mention, less difficult doesn’t necessarily mean easy, as the wastelands of Fallout are still filled with ruthless savages that are out for blood – yours, specifically.

10. Metro Series

The Metro series – Metro 2033, Last Light, and Exodus – puts players in the shoes of Artyom as he attempts to guide himself and his family through Moscow’s underground metro system as they try to avoid either death by radiation or by other nightmarish creatures while also keeping on the lookout for other survivors who will stop at nothing to ensure their survival over theirs.

Unlike the S.T.A.L.K.E.R or Fallout games, the story of Metro is much more linear. It’s literally going from point A to point B. However, what happens when going from one point to another is so cleverly executed, complete with some of the best atmosphere in gaming, and tight gunplay to boot, that you wouldn’t mind just going along with this very fun ride.
